Movie recommendations

I’ve recently watched a few good movies (some of which you might already have heard, others that you might not know about at all) and I thought I’d share these with you, because I thought they were really worthwhile watching.

movies2

Promised Land (with Matt Damon) – I hadn’t heard of this movie before, I mean, not by any advertising, online praise or the like. We happened to come across it on HBO (I think) and  J recorded it and it was really, really good and I highly recommend it.

Lola rennt (Run, Lola, Run) (with Franka Potente and Moritz Bleibtreu) – This is an oldie, but a goodie. If you haven’t seen this (obviously German) movie from 1998, do yourself a favor and watch it sometime. I think the cinematography and storytelling is unique and I always notice that German (and other foreign) movies dare to challenge the viewer’s attention span by having longer stretches without dialogue or without  much happening in fast succession. I enjoy this ‘breathing time’ to take in the details. I personally also enjoy watching a movie (or reading a book) in German every once in a while. It just stimulates a different part of my brain (or something), although I do notice how bad the subtitles are sometimes. I wonder what kind of people get the job doing the subtitles (as in, what kind of qualifications do they have?)  and how good their grasp of the English language really is, because oh boy, some of the translations are not even close!

The Chronicles of Narnia (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe) (with Tilda Swinton, Liam Neeson) – This one is a no-brainer, am I right? I love the “Chronicles of Narnia”-movies. It’s one of those series that you can just watch over and over again.

Up in the air (with George Clooney) – yet another movie I hadn’t heard about, but who would say no to a movie with George Clooney, right? I mean, I don’t swoon over George (although he is good looking!), but definitely haven’t watched a movie with him in it that wasn’t worth my time. This one was no exception. Very interesting plot!

Untitled

The Theory of Everything (with Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones) – I just watched this (Oscar-nominated and Oscar-winning) movie last weekend and I loved it. It was such a brilliant performance by both Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones and it is such an inspiring, yet heart-breaking story of love, commitment and never-ending hope and perseverance. I admit that I am easily moved to tears as is, but this film was definitely a real tear-jerker (in the most positive way!). A must-see!

Non-Stop (with Liam Neeson) – This was also a movie I hadn’t heard about (from anyone), but Liam Neeson is such a good actor and this is such a good thriller movie (I only cringed once during a James Bond moment where I kept shaking my head thinking “no f***cking way”). If you enjoyed the “Taken”-movies, you’ll definitely enjoy this one.

Which movies have you watched lately? Any particular ones that you would recommend?

  1. I’ve watching some of these and still would like to see The Theory of Everything, but I’ll wait for it to get to streaming.

Promised Land was such a good movie. I highly recommend that one.

Have you seen The Grand Budapest Hotel? I REALLY loved that movie. Matt even liked it (a lot) and he doesn’t like movies (if that says anything). If you haven’t seen it yet, that’s one to see (if you like Wes Anderson movies).

  2. We watched Big Hero 6 with friends last weekend. It’s a cartoon but I was surprised at how good it was – it was actually really funny! I love all of the Narnia movies!

  3. How Crazy is that?! We watched nonstop yesterday and agreed it’s a great movie.
I really hated Lola rennt though …

  4. I haven’t seen some of these so we will have to check them out! We’ve been watching more movies lately. Last weekend we watched Foxcatcher. Phil liked it but it was too slow moving for me and then last weekend we watched Gone Girl. I read and really enjoyed the book so thought I would love the movie but I felt a bit meh about it…

  5. The latest movie I’ve seen was Kingsmen The Secret Service and it was FANTASTIC. Funny, well done, and the English accents made me swoon. :) I’m going to see Cinderella this evening with a friend and I can’t wait! I hear it’s wonderful.

  6. We have warched The Theorie of Everything and loved it too! I have been a fan of Eddie for a while now (since the Pillars of the Earth) and we were thrilled and very happy for him that he got his well deserved Acadamie Award!

  7. We watched Big Hero 6, American Sniper and The Kingsmen, lately – I really loved all of them! I want to see The Theory of Everything – I saw the trailer and cried. And I want to see Cinderella.
We love all the Narnia movies and I loved Up in the Air.

  8. Oh I really enjoyed Up in the Air (actually a lot more than I liked the book) and Theory of Everything was so fascinating. I also recently watched The Imitation Game, that was a good one. And Big Hero 6, such a cute and fun Disney one.

  9. I loved Up in the Air so much!! I’m so glad you did too!
